Wombling free in Bulgaria

IF you want a beach holiday this summer but feel countries in the Eurozone are too expensive then take a look at Bulgaria.

Only three hours’ flight from London to Varna on the Black Sea, the journey is easy enough for a young family.

Before I went to this beautiful part of the Balkans, the only thing I knew about Bulgaria was the character in The Wombles. But within 30 minutes of touching down, I was introduced to its Communist past as I was driven past a mixture of concrete apartment blocks and amazing orthodox churches.

The Golden Sands Resort is just north of the lively city of Varna and has nearly three miles of sandy white beaches.

Beer

We checked into the five-star Hotel Helios Spa and Resort set on a hill with breathtaking views over the beach, just a 10-minute walk away.

It was the perfect place to unwind with a cold bottle of Bulgarian beer.
