NEW DELHI: The high-definition telecast of the Commonwealth Games is in jeopardy. There are major glitches with the lighting at three major sporting arenas that are likely to adversely impact conditions required for the promised high-quality television.
At a review meeting on Monday, the DD team drew attention to certain features of stadia that affected light quality and said it needed to better control luminosity even during day time sporting events. This was needed for the telecast promised to viewers as well as advertisers as DD will be the major TV platform.
At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium’s wrestling and weightlifting arenas, the light streaming in from high windows that are like skylights is a problem for the telecast. The windows need to be blocked out so that light conditions can be monitored to the satisfaction of the DD team.
Similarly, at the newly recast Talkatora swimming stadium, light reflects off the water in a manner that affects TV operations. And at the shooting range, a large ledge is obstructing the view in a such a way so as to prevent a clear line of sight to the target. In all three venues, DD needs an even and consistent quality of light necessary for HD telecast.
The DD team explained that it cannot use a combination of light sources and it has to have a stable and largely unchanging intensity of illumination. The problems need to be resolved soon so that DD can do the trial runs but the Sports Authority of India, which run the stadia, has said there is very little it can do

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), July 26, 2010
IT’S been one of those weekends.
I suppose the first indication was when I stepped into the shower, used body gel on my hair and wondered why the conditioner didn’t lather when I rubbed it on my lower regions.
Was this old age or simple stupidity? Then I found myself attempting to open a packet of bacon with a bottle opener.
These events did not all happen on the same day but have been gently spread as if in warning that my little grey cells might be congealing.
I half convinced myself that it was a simple lapse of concentration, only to realise, as I removed my hot steak pie from the oven, that the portion of processed peas I had decanted from a can and placed in a bowl to heat, were still cold because I had put them in the refrigerator instead of the microwave.
Flipping heck. Perhaps I was going barmy.
I mean, I still, on occasions, mistake Maria’s hair spray for deodorant and give my armpits such a good blast that I walk around for half an hour like a sumo-wrestler until its potency evaporates.
And then the balance of order was somewhat restored by my wife who, every morning, fills the percolator and sets it to coughing and spluttering, not only to fill the kitchen with the delightful aroma of fresh coffee but to provide me with a full supply of the rich brew of which I partake frequently during the day. It’s supposed to keep Alzheimer’s at bay.
“Oh no,” she said, when she checked. “What’s wrong?” I said.
The coffee looked remarkably clear -mainly because she had forgot to put any in. What a relief to realise I was not losing it all on my own; I would have company when the men in the white coats arrived.
To cap it all, whilst I was upstairs working in my office, Maria asked me if I was ready for tea. Tea being the early evening meal variety, and not a China cup and cucumber sandwiches

MUMBAI (AFP) State-run carrier Air India, struggling to cut losses, is hopeful of swinging into profit in 2014-15 as its turnaround plan takes shape, its chairman said on Sunday.
Air India’s board met Sunday to outline a growth strategy for the carrier to combat growing competition, as part of a five-year turnaround plan ending 2014.
“We are confident that as the turnaround plan gathers pace, we will have a positive balance sheet (by) year 2014-15,” Air India chairman Arvind Jadhav told reporters on Sunday evening.
The airline saw a rise in passenger traffic revenue of 28 percent, or 5.4 billion rupees (115 million dollars), from a year ago, officials said without disclosing details.

Shenandoah Valley Breaks Ground For School Addition

SHENANDOAH – The ceremonial turning of a shovelful of dirt Monday evening formally launched the construction of additional classrooms and upgrades for existing facilities in the Shenandoah Valley School District.
The administration, school board, support staff and architects gathered between the elementary schol and the former bus maintenance garage as school board President Christopher Knapp particpated in the ceremonial digging, using a shovel that was also used for the groundbreaking of the high school in the early 1980s and the elementary building in the early 1990s.
“I’m just elated that the school board saw the need to stick to their convictions and do what’s good for the students of the Shenandoah Valley School District,” said district Superintendent Stanley G. Rakowsky, Ph.D. “The record has shown that enrollment has increased and is increasing and to be competitive with all other schools, the physical plant is something that has to be taken into consideration.”
Prior to the groundbreaking, the school board held a special meeting, which included the final approvals on the contracts to include alternates to make additional improvements in the existing buildings.
The longstanding student overcrowding situation was brought up during Rakowsky’s report to the school board at the meeting. It was noted that two elementary grades will have large numbers of students due to the lack of space.
“Right now we have 104 students registered for the fourth grade and 93 for fifth grade and we have no place to put another class,” Rakowsky said

State: Search of purse and phone legit
0 Comments | Sun Journal; Lewiston, Me., Jan 29, 2009 | by M. Dirk Langeveld
PARIS – Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson said police did not violate the rights of murder suspect Christopher Duane Waterman when they searched a purse belonging to his wife in the course of their investigation.
A cell phone in the purse was seized as possible evidence. Benson filed a memo recently in Oxford County Superior Court opposing an earlier defense motion asking that the evidence be withheld from trial.
Benson said the search was justified as they worked to determine who killed Timothy Mayberry, 50, of West Paris and Todd Smith, 43, of Paris at Mayberry’s home last July.
Waterman, 32, of Sumner has been charged with killing both men.
Earlier, defense lawyer John Jenness Jr. said police did not have a right to search a prepaid cell phone found in the purse.
Benson argued in a motion filed Monday that Jenness failed to prove that the phone belonged to Waterman and that police were authorized to search cell phones and their contents to find evidence of any relationship between Waterman and Mayberry.
Other manufacturers use EnviroWood which is a synthetic wood substitute made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and containers. The plastic is permeated with UV stabilized coloring that is consistent throughout.
Plastic Adirondack chairs and furniture have been designed for comfort and are built to last. They are unaffected by sun, rain, snow, even chlorine and saltwater. There is no need to paint or sand your plastic or resin patio furniture or apply a treatment seasonally. It does not rot, warp, crack or splinter. And because the furniture has solid color throughout, you can leave your plastic Adirondack chairs outside year-round because they will not fade.
With such life-long features, it is no wonder why people are getting sold on plastic and resin patio furniture.

But you can only throw it so far and thus your enemy need not worry about such things until you get close. If you stand up to use your whole body to throw it further using all the human kinetic energy, forward motion, muscle twitch and adrenaline possible you are liable to be shot, before you can throw it. If you do not throw it far enough you have wasted it and perhaps too easily given a better pinpoint of your position.
It has been proposed recently by a think tanker (me) that the US Military needs to have flying and steerable hand grenades for the US Marine Corp and the United States Army. Small hand thrown hand grenades, which power up and propel them selves towards the enemy like a rocket propelled grenade without the firing unit. Envisioned are hand grenades where expandable wings pop out and inflate and a little rocket motor ignites and it flies towards the enemy. In route it will be steered from a foxhole or safe refuge. Think on this in 2006.

Wombling free in Bulgaria

IF you want a beach holiday this summer but feel countries in the Eurozone are too expensive then take a look at Bulgaria.
Only three hours’ flight from London to Varna on the Black Sea, the journey is easy enough for a young family.
Before I went to this beautiful part of the Balkans, the only thing I knew about Bulgaria was the character in The Wombles. But within 30 minutes of touching down, I was introduced to its Communist past as I was driven past a mixture of concrete apartment blocks and amazing orthodox churches.
The Golden Sands Resort is just north of the lively city of Varna and has nearly three miles of sandy white beaches.
Beer
We checked into the five-star Hotel Helios Spa and Resort set on a hill with breathtaking views over the beach, just a 10-minute walk away.
It was the perfect place to unwind with a cold bottle of Bulgarian beer.
The hotel has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, play area and nursery, bars galore plus great restaurants and cafes. But what really makes the hotel stand out is its Aphrodite Spa

Pool problem?
0 Comments | Plymouth Evening Herald, The, Jul 26, 2010
LAST Wednesday, for those that knew about it, there were a number of displays regarding the different parts of the City of Plymouth action plan on view in the city centre at the Roland Levinsky building.
One was for North Plymstock, regarding Sherford.
One has to ask why this North Plymstock display was on view in the city centre, when on Friday, July 30 it is planned to have a display regarding Plymstock Quarry at Plymstock Community Centre.
Could the swimming pool situation be one reason? The petition for this can still be viewed. Go to the website www.petition.co.uk then under ‘search’, enter petition title ‘plymstock swimming pool site’.
To those people without access to the internet, please lobby Plymstock councillors.
